Frequently asked questions

Our customer support team have listened to your feedback and put together a list of answers to your most frequently asked questions. Use the category drop down below to help find your answers more quickly.

Composite Doors

How long will it take to install my new composite door?

Generally speaking, it will take 1 or 2 engineers around 3-4 hours to fit your new composite door.

Is the price quoted on the website the price I will pay?

Our composite doors are listed with a price each, which is based on the most common specifications. Of course, if you require a different size of door, a different colour or you’d like additional door furniture (such as a spy hole) then the price is likely to change. All quotes provided by us here at VPS247 are no obligation, which means you can find out how much your dream door will be without any commitment to buy. For a bespoke quote, please book in for a free home survey.

What are composite doors made from?

Composite doors are constructed from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic), which is another name for fiberglass. This is an extremely versatile material that has been made to look just like timber. A foam-filled core ensures the door is light, strong and thermally efficient, and the outer layers are scratch and chip resistant. In fact, the colour you choose will be applied throughout the GRP, ensuring that it will not fade or peel in the elements.

What maintenance will my new composite door require?

Composite doors are practically maintenance-free; all they require is a wipe down with a cloth and soapy water every now and again. You do not need to treat or repaint your door.

As there are many different sizes and customisable options, it’d be impossible to list them all. For this reason, each of our uPVC doors are priced according to the most common spec. Full details are available on each individual product page. This has been done to give you a ballpark idea of how much you can expect to pay. Please note: the cost of your door may not be the same as the displayed price if you need a different size, colour, glazing option or hardware selection. We can offer you a bespoke, no obligation quote once we have conducted a free survey of your home.

Is the price quoted on the website the price I will pay?

The prices you can see for our patio door range on the website are merely a guide to give you an idea of what you’re likely to pay. The prices are based on common specifications, so if you choose a different finish, size or configuration, you are likely to be quoted a different price to the one shown. Our quotes come with no obligation and we are committed to transparent, fair pricing.

What maintenance will my new patio doors require?

Timber, aluminium and uPVC patio doors are all relatively maintenance-free, although real timber frames will need treating every so often (around every 1-2 years) with a wood stain or similar to ensure they’re kept in the best condition. A general wipe-down with a clean, soft cloth dipped in soapy water is good for all frame types (make sure you rinse the soap off) and keeping the runners/mechanism clean and free of debris is also beneficial.

Which type of patio door is best for my home?

The size of the opening, your personal tastes and your budget are all things to consider when looking into new patio doors. Those with large door openings may benefit from BiFold doors over French or Sliding, as this would make the most of the space. French doors can look very classic and traditional – perfect for smaller openings and older properties, and Sliding doors may be best for medium-sized openings or those who’d like a wide open space when the door is open, without being completely exposed. Take a look around your neighbourhood and consider your day-to-day routine when thinking about what’s best for you.

Garage Doors

Can my existing frame be used for my new garage door?

In some cases the frame that’s holding in your current garage door can be reused, but this depends on a number of factors. We would not recommend re-using a timber frame, as utilising existing drill holes can compromise the integrity of your new door, and we want to make sure we do an excellent job which is going to last.

Our engineer should be able to check this during your free survey and advise accordingly. We would not be able to confirm the use of an existing frame without checking it in person first.

How quickly does a motorised garage door open?

The opening speed of an automated door varies depending on the size/weight of the door and how old the mechanism is, but you can expect it to move at around 160mm (6inches) per second.

Is the price quoted on the website the price I will pay for my garage door?

Garage door measurements are complicated and although we ask for the basics from you, our surveyor may find a difference between the door you’ve specified and the gap it needs to go into. The type of door, the space for the mechanism and whether it’s being mounted within or behind the opening can all cause changes in the measurements and therefore the price to be paid.

We will always make sure you’re happy with the full cost before going ahead – the total final cost will be made available to you once your free survey has been completed. You are under no obligation to go ahead if the price is very different to what you anticipated. Our advisors will try to ensure that you are given comprehensive measuring instructions suited to your circumstances to avoid wildly different quotes.

If the door you have chosen is standard, with no additional specifications and is the correct size, the price you see will be the price you pay. As a general rule, the price will only change if you want something extra or if you need a different door.

We have done our absolute best to ensure that our pricing is transparent. All quoted prices include the fitting, VAT and the removal of your old door.

What if the garage door size I have supplied is wrong?

Garage doors are notoriously complicated when it comes to working out the correct measurements, which is why we provide a free survey before confirming your order. If you have supplied us with the wrong measurements this will be rectified by the surveyor and will not affect the time it takes to get your door fitted. It will, however, be likely to change the price of your door. For more information about how to measure your garage door, please see our guide.

What is included in the price of my garage door?

The cost of your garage door includes

  • The garage door itself
  • The internal opening mechanism
  • VAT
  • Full installation
  • A basic black handle (except for Roller & Sectional doors)
  • Roller doors only –The door motor and two remote handsets
Which garage door material is best?

This depends on the look you want to create for your home, your budget and your opinions on maintenance. The pros and cons for each material can be found in the material guide, helping you to make an informed decision. Often, it’s the opening mechanism that dictates the material of the door, as some door types may only be available in one or two base materials. You can find out more by looking at the Garage Door Material Guide.

Which garage door opening mechanism should I choose?

Each opening mechanism has its benefits, and depending on the type of garage you have, one type may suit much better than another. Check out our guides to each opening style to see which one works best for your needs. Our knowledgeable staff are on call 24/7 and can help with this if you are still unsure.

Will my garage door require a lot of maintenance?

A timber door will require regular maintenance throughout its lifetime, whereas steel, steel with a timber effect and aluminium doors require very little. See our guide to the different door materials to find out what you need to do to take care of your chosen door. Our experienced engineers should also be able to advise you on the best way to care for your new garage door.

How do I book my free survey?

You can book a free survey by using our free survey form or calling us on 0345 145 0130. Once we have completed a survey of the works to be carried out, we can then offer you a comprehensive quote with no obligation.

How do I know you will give me a fair price in an emergency?

We will first give you an estimate over the phone so you have an idea of how much the repair will cost. Our engineers will inspect the damage when they arrive and provide you with an accurate quote. We will only proceed to repair or secure your locks and glazing if you are happy with the price, and we will not charge you for the call out.

How do I pay?

Once the surveyor has confirmed the correct measurements and confirmed a final cost with you, we ask for a 50% deposit to be paid over the phone with one of our VPS 247 advisors. The final 50% will be required once the product has been fitted. Please call us on 0345 146 7001 to make a secure payment.

If you are purchasing something from VPS 247 on a supply only basis (e.g. an alarm or lock) then you will be required to pay over the phone at the point of sale.

Please note: You will NOT be charged high fees when calling us. Calling our number will cost the same as a standard landline call.

Once we have surveyed your home, we can usually prepare a full and accurate quote within 24-48 hours. However, this may take longer at busy times of the year (over Christmas, for instance) or if you have requested a certain product. We will endeavour to keep you updated throughout.

Please note that any special requirements can increase the time it takes us to deliver your door, for example if you require a bespoke colour.

Each type of garage door takes a different amount of time to fit. This is because certain opening mechanisms are more complex to install than others. As a general guide, approximate fitting times are as follows:

  • Tracked Up & Over: 4 hours
  • Sectional: 4 to 6 hours
  • Roller: 4- 8 hours

If you have yet to have your survey, this will be cancelled. Please note that if you have already confirmed an order and you’ve paid your deposit, you will not get this back.

While problems are rare, we understand that things don’t always go to plan. Please call us straight away on 0345 145 0130 or email wecare@evander.com if you experience any issues. We’ll do everything we can to ensure it gets sorted as soon as possible.

Our dedicated phone number will charge the same as a standard landline, meaning that it is covered under mobile network ‘minutes’. It may also be free to call us from a landline after a certain time, depending on your current home phone package.

What is Secured by Design?

Many of our products are approved by the Secured by Design (SBD) initiative.

Secured by Design is a scheme backed by UK police which aims to ‘design out’ crime. This means that any product which has achieved SBD status has been designed and manufactured with security in mind from the beginning. Secured by Design products are rigorously tested to ensure they can withstand high levels of damage should someone try to forcibly enter your property.

What should I do to prepare for my installation?

Please ensure that our engineers have space to work. For instance, if you are having a garage door fitted, your garage should be cleared as much as possible. If you have space restrictions then this can be discussed with the surveyor before your fitting. We also request that you ensure we are able to park as close as possible, as some of our products and equipment is very heavy. Please be assured that our engineers will leave your property clean and tidy once they have completed the job.

Which garage door material is best?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nullam non leo a nunc volutpat convallis. Nunc fermentum sem eget eros aliquet, ut tempus enim finibus.

Which garage door opening mechanism should I choose?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nullam non leo a nunc volutpat convallis. Nunc fermentum sem eget eros aliquet, ut tempus enim finibus.

Why do you need to survey before my product is fitted?

All orders are made to specific sizes and measurements. It might be hard to believe, but doors, windows and garage doors are not made to standard sizes. Because of that we will send one of our experienced surveyors to your home to get exact measurements to enable us to give an exact price and to be able to order with the manufacturer should you decide to go ahead.

The engineer can advise of the best materials to use and whilst they’re there you can discuss other options with you.

Will my garage door require a lot of maintenance?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nullam non leo a nunc volutpat convallis. Nunc fermentum sem eget eros aliquet, ut tempus enim finibus.

Will the survey cost me any money?

No. The survey is completely free and will remain so even if you change your mind. We do not charge a call out fee for any of our services and you won’t be pushed into completing your order if you decide you don’t want to go ahead.

Will you take old windows/doors/garage doors etc. away after fitting a new one?

Yes – we’ll take old items away with us once we’ve installed your new one. Anything we remove will be disposed of properly and we always recycle where possible.

Security Locks

Can you replace my Chubb lock?

Chubb no longer manufacture household locks, but we can replace it with a like for like lock made by Union, Yale or ERA.

How do I know if my lock can be snapped?

If you have uPVC or composite door, or you have to lift the handle to lock your door, you most probably have a Euro-cylinder lock. However, if you have a Secured by Design door that was fitted after 2010, it should already have an anti-snap lock fitted.

How long will it take to install my new home security alarm?

Depending on the type of home you have and the product(s) you have chosen, you can expect 1 engineer to install your home security alarm (and any accessories) in around 3-6 hours.

How long will it take to install my new lock?

It takes 1 of our trained locksmiths 30mins – 1 hour to install a new lock to your home.

I live in an apartment or flat – can I still have a security alarm?

Yes you can! We have the Apartment Alarm available, which is mounted inside the property rather than on the outside wall. As many people who live in apartments rent or do not have permission/the means to install an alarm on the outside of the building itself, this alarm ensures that you’re still covered.

Is the price quoted on the website the price I will pay?

Yes – the prices you see on the website (one for supply only, where we’d send it to you via post, and one for supply and fit, where an VPS 247 engineer would come and install it for you) are the prices you will pay. If you have ordered an alarm with fitting, then you will only pay the supply price for any accessories bought for installation at the same time.

Is the price quoted on the website the price I will pay?

Yes – the prices you see on the website (one for supply only, where we’d send it to you via post, and one for supply and fit, where an VPS247 engineer would come and install it for you) are the prices you will pay.

What can I do if my lock is vulnerable?

There are many different anti-snap locks on the market, but we recommend the Yale anti-snap lock as we believe it is the most secure. Our engineers can quickly install a new lock for little cost.

The Yale lock also has anti-pick, anti-bump, anti-screw, and anti-drill protection options and is BSI Kitemark Approved – a symbol of quality and performance. It also meets the TS007 1 Star protection grade, is guaranteed for 10 years, and comes with 3 keys.

What is a multi-point locking mechanism?

This is not a lock in itself, but is powered by a euro cylinder lock. A multi-point locking mechanism is a line of bolts down the edge of a door that extend into the frame when the key is turned to lock it. This mechanism is often found on uPVC and composite doors, and on patio and French doors.

If your door is older than 5 years, then your multi-point locking mechanism is probably no longer manufactured. There have been major advances in this technology, and our locksmiths are able to fit a Universal Yale Multi-Locking System to most doors.

What maintenance will my new lock require?

In order to keep your locks in top working order for the longest time possible, it’s advisable to give them a little attention every year or so. This helps to keep your home secure, extends the life of the lock, and prevents the need for potentially expensive repairs in the future. You simply need to lubricate the lock with oil or specialist lock lubrication – you can find products like this at any home hardware shop. It’s also advisable to keep your lock clean and to remove any obstructions.

What maintenance will my new security alarm require?

Your new alarm/accessories shouldn’t need any maintenance other than keeping them free of dirt and dust. A quick wipe over with a soft cloth (please don’t use water on electronic equipment!!) should keep your alarm and accessories free of dust and working properly. If you’ve chosen to have the smoke alarm accessory, then you will need to regularly test this for fire safety reasons.

Sliding Patio Doors

How long will it take to install my new patio doors?

It should take 2 of our engineers around 4-5 hours to install your new patio doors. Larger BiFold sets or more complicated jobs may take longer.

Take a look around your neighbourhood and consider your day-to-day routine when thinking about what’s best for you.

uPVC Doors

How long will it take to install my new uPVC door?

Where no other factors are at play, it will take 1 or 2 Evander engineers to fit your uPVC door. Fitting is usually complete within 4 hours.

Is the price quoted on the website the price I will pay?

As there are many different sizes and customisable options, it’d be impossible to list them all. For this reason, each of our uPVC doors are priced according to the most common spec. Full details are available on each individual product page. This has been done to give you a ballpark idea of how much you can expect to pay. Please note: the cost of your door may not be the same as the displayed price if you need a different size, colour, glazing option or hardware selection. We can offer you a bespoke, no obligation quote once we have conducted a free survey of your home.

What maintenance will my new uPVC door require?

Our uPVC doors are practically maintenance-free. You will not need to treat or repaint your door for the duration of its working life. All it will need to stay in tip top condition is a wipe down with some soapy water and a soft cloth every now and again.

Windows

Are all uPVC windows the same?

In short, no. Different companies may use varying qualities and strengths of uPVC frames. Some may use older designs that have a lower level of security. Remember that the energy efficiency rating of a window alone does not indicate quality, though this is an important element to consider. We install Energy Efficient B-rated uPVC windows that are insurance approved as standard, made in a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant.

Do I need to replace the window frame if my glazing mists up?

If the window frame is in good condition, you can have just the glass replaced when the seal has failed. You could even upgrade your glazing unit to Grade-A glazing that saves you more on your energy bills.

How long will it take to install my new windows?

On average, it takes our engineers around 3 hours to fit one window. If you’re having all your windows replaced, we may book this in over two or three days. Our surveyor will be able to give you a better idea of timings at your free survey.

What maintenance will my new windows require?

Double and triple glazing should be cleaned with a soft cloth with water and washing-up liquid. Where there is more dirt and grime than normal we suggest a commercial window cleaning solution. Please remember to keep the solution away from the frame and wash away any residue with clean water.

Often, the most effective care methods for cleaning and extending the lifespan of a window frame are really very simple. Using a soft cloth with water and some washing up liquid is the easiest and best way to keep your frames clean.

Please do not use:

  • Glass cleaner on frames
  • Any other cleaning agent
  • Caustic or ammonia-based cleaning agents
  • Scouring powder or other abrasive cleaners
  • Steel wool or scouring pads

Timber window frames will need treating every 1 or 2 years depending on the environmental conditions. South-facing windows may need treating more frequently than others due to the direction of the sun.

Which window frame material is best for me?

This depends on a number of factors, including your personal taste, the look of your home and your budget. Some properties (such as ones which are listed or located in a conservation area) will only be permitted to have timber windows. In fact, some listed buildings will require like-for-like window replacements, so it’s important to check with your local authority before making any changes to an old building. Aluminium and uPVC frames are both relatively maintenance-free, with aluminium suiting more modern properties. If you like the look of timber window frames but your budget doesn’t stretch to the real deal, then uPVC with a timber-effect finish may be the best solution for you. Take a look at your neighbourhood and consider how you want your property to look – you can also ask the opinion of our experienced surveyor during your free survey.

Why are there no window prices on your website?

We have not listed prices for our windows, as it’s hard to give a general idea of what it will cost due to the sheer amount of options available. We can make windows to almost any size or configuration, so we advise that you call us on 0345 145 0130 to arrange a free, no obligation survey of your property. We’ll then be able to prepare a comprehensive quote for you and go from there.
